I’m sure most people have heard by now about the 5.8 earthquake that shook up the East Coast yesterday. While the damage wasn’t near as horrific as it could have been, there are always a few buildings left worse for the wear when the trembling stops. I thought this might be a great chance to bring up a few key points about Washington Earthquake Insurance that may not be as widely known as I’d hope!

~ The standard Washington Homeowners Insurance Policy, Washington Renters Insurance Policy, and Washington Condo Insurance Policy do not, I repeat, DO NOT, cover for damage due to an earthquake.

~ Unlike the average Washington Homeowners Insurance Policy, Washington Earthquake Insurance is designed to coverage catastrophic damage with a deductible that is usually 10% to 25% of the structure’s insured value.

A few things you can do around your own home, to minimize damage in the case of an earthquake, are:

~ Make sure your water heater, gas appliances, and other such fixtures are fastened securely.

~ Ensure that bookcases and wall hangings are secure and fastened to the wall or ceiling.

~ Have a family emergency plan in place, and remind family members what that plan is. Designate a meeting place outside the home where family members can gather once the danger has passed

~ Designate a distant relative or friend who can serve as a point of contact and communication for your family – in case family members were to get seperated.

~ Have an emergency kit at home, including: flashlights, batteries, candles, watersafe matches, and a portable radio.

~ Make sure everyone in your home knows how to turn off the utilities (ie. Electricity, water, gas…) in case of an emergency.

As with any insurance policy, the premium for your own individual Washington Earthquake Insurance Policy will depend on the age of your home, it’s location, it’s replacement value/cost, and of course, if the home has been retrofitted for earthquake damage.
