Knock Knock - Anyone Home?

5/16/2011 10:25:00 AM

Before coming into the office this morning I saw a breaking news piece about a home fire that had started over night. Luckily the firefighters had been able to keep it under control & it doesn’t sound as though the fire was going to affect the surrounding homes. One of the reporters mentioned that they were fairly certain no one had been in the home, as the house was currently vacant, for sale, & was actually part of an open house tour this past weekend. While any house fire is of course a horrible incident and its great news that no one was injured – the part that really struck me was the mention of the home being vacant & for sale.

Few people spend too much time reading over the policy paperwork they receive for their Washington homeowners’ insurance policy. They meet with an agent, most likely when they’re first purchasing the home – and so long as they pay the annual premiums, the policy stays in force – and it’s never given a second thought. What a lot of folks don’t realize is that there are a plethora of different kinds of home insurance policies. Depending on the age of your home, its size, how it’s built, whether it’s a home you own or rent, as well as if it’s your primary home, secondary home, or perhaps a home that you rent out to tenants. And, most importantly, is your home currently vacant and on the market.

In each of these cases there are slight differences between the home policy you need, and the coverage that’s being provided. So as a word to the wise, chances are it’s been a year or more (don’t be embarrassed if it’s been MUCH more than a year – time flies when you’re living the dream) since you’ve taken a really good look at what your homeowners insurance policy covers. And, as always, give your agent a call or email – it’s their job to look over that policy with you & make sure that it’s still exactly the coverage you need. If you don’t have a local agent, or might be interested in seeing what other options are available to you, don’t hesitate to give me a call or email as well – I’d love the chance to make sure you & your family have the coverage you need!
